Living with an intellectual disability, Andrew faced challenges in the workplace that made it difficult to feel confident and supported, from remembering procedures to understanding responsibilities and navigating communication with colleagues.
Andrew had become discouraged and unsure of his future. He went to APM Employment Services in Dubbo looking for a change – and he found the fresh start he needed.
With the help of Employer Account Manager Dylan and Business Manager Courtney, Andrew began his journey toward meaningful employment.
Andrew’s goal was to work for Woolworths – but he had previously been told his barriers would make that impossible. Together with his new team, Andrew got to work on making his dream a reality. Dylan and Courtney guided him through onboarding and training required to join Woolworths, ensuring he felt comfortable every step of the way.
When the opportunity for work arrived, they accompanied Andrew to his first meeting, introduced him to the store, and attended some of his first shifts to help him understand procedures. They also provided practical support, including work clothes and fuel vouchers to make sure he could get to work comfortably and confidently.
As he progressed, Andrew had regular check-ins with APM Employment Consultant Joel and Courtney to help him stay on track and quickly resolve any concerns. Joel and Courtney also supported Andrew’s employer and when it became clear a different store would better suit Andrew, they helped arrange a transfer to the new store, where Andrew found a supportive environment and a shorter commute.
Since his arrival at APM, Andrew has grown more outgoing, self-reliant, and responsible. And his hard work and dedication quickly paid off when he was offered a permanent part-time role as a night filler for Woolworths. He has even secured extra shifts as a shelf packer, giving him more opportunities to thrive.
“APM worked with me to get a great job,” Andrew said praising his support team.
“They went with me to work and helped me with my training. They also helped me to fix my car and get new clothes for work.”
Now, Andrew is looking forward to building his career and continuing to grow in his role.
