Doris moved to Innisfail with her husband four years ago in search of warmer weather and a relaxed lifestyle. However, since the move, Doris struggled to find employment.

She applied for multiple jobs but struggled to get past the interview stage. Although it was frustrating, she never gave up. She decided to come to EPIC Assist (EPIC) to access extra support as she persevered with her job hunt.

At EPIC she was introduced to Employment Consultant Mark and Employment Advisor Trudy. They both spent time getting to know Doris’ interests, strengths and employment goals. From there they were able to establish the type of work where Doris could thrive and created a personalised job plan.

Mark worked closely with Doris and supported her by enhancing her resume, preparing job applications, practising interviewing techniques and enrolling her in an online training course.

“EPIC has offered me so much support. I particularly loved doing the retail course as it gave me something to do whilst boosting my knowledge and skills,” said Doris.

Meanwhile, Trudy reached out to her extensive list of professional connections to set up interviews with a range of inclusive and supportive employers.

All of this led to Doris gaining meaningful employment as a kitchen hand for Riverside Café.

Doris was ecstatic when she found out she got the job.

“It was so exciting when I found out, I literally jumped for joy,” said Doris.

“It is the best thing that has happened to me since moving to Innisfail.”

Doris has now been working at Riverside Café for a month and loving it. For Doris, employment is more than just earning an income.

“I love working! It keeps me busy and my mind active, “said Doris.

“I want to feel that I can do more. When I work, it feels like I am contributing to my community.”

Being a kitchen hand, Doris completes a range of tasks each shift. Her favourite part of her job is the dishwashing.

“I get a lot of compliments from my boss about how efficiently I wash everything up. It is so nice to work somewhere where I receive positive reinforcement.”
