  • ACOSS | Australian Council of Social Services
    The Australian Council of Social Service is the peak body of the community services and welfare sector and the national voice for the needs of people affected by poverty and inequality.
  • ADE | Australian Disability Enterprise

    Australian Disability Enterprises are commercial businesses that provide sheltered employment for people with disability. 

  • AJS | Australian Job Search
    Australian JobSearch is a website funded by the Australian Government as a free service to help job seekers find jobs and connect employers to quality staff. 
     
  • ATSI | Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
     
  • CALD | Culturally and linguistically diverse
     
  • CRRS | Conflict, Resolutions, and Referral Services

    A complaints resolution service for people using Australian Government-funded disability employment and advocacy services.

  • DEEWR | Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations
    In October 2013, DEEWR was split into the Department of Education and the Department of Employment.
     
  • DES | Disability Employment Service

    Over 150 organisations that seek to find permanent open-market employment for people with disability.

  • DHS | Department of Human Services
    The Australian Government Department of Human Services is about people and the services they may need at different stages of their lives.
  • DMS | Disability Management Service

    A service focussed on assisting participants to understand, compensate for or manage their injury, disability or health condition, or the resulting limitations or restrictions they may face.

  • DSP | Disability Support Pension
    Financial support for people who have a physical, intellectual, or psychiatric condition that stops them from working or who are permanently blind.
  • DSS | Disability Services Standard

    These standards define what the government expects services to achieve when assisting people with disability and their families.
     

  • DSS | Department of Social Services
    The Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA) changed to the Department of Social Services. 
  • EAF | Employment Assistance Fund

    The Employment Assistance Fund provides financial assistance for people with disability who are about to start work or who are currently employed, to purchase a range of work-related modifications and services. 

  • EPP | Employment Pathway Plan

    An Employment Pathway Plan is an individually tailored plan that identifies a participant’s vocational goals and records the activities the participant will undertake to reach these goals.

  • ESA | Employment Services Area

    A geographical area, within a Labour Market Region, identified and described by Department of Employment.

  • ESAt | Employment Services Assessment

    An Employment Services Assessment helps work out the type of employment service or other assistance that can best help a participant prepare for, find and maintain work.

  • ESL | Eligible School Leaver

    An eligible full-time secondary student with disability seeking open employment assistance as a pathway to transition from secondary studies. 

  • ESS | Employment Support Service

    A scheme available to participants with permanent disability, and who are assessed as needing regular long-term ongoing support in the workplace. 

  • EWS | Enhanced Wage Subsidy
    A subsidy targeted at long-term unemployed job seekers for employment placements of fifteen hours or more per week.
  • FaHCSIA | Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs
    This department has been rebranded as the Department of Social Services. 
     
  • FMW | Federal Minimum Wage
     
  • FO | Full Outcome

    A payment made to a DES Provider for assisting a participant achieve education or employment according to the relevant guidelines.

  • JCA | Job Capacity Assessment

    A Job Capacity Assessment determines the impact of medical conditions and disability on a participant’s ability to work, and whether they would benefit from employment assistance.

  • JiJ | Job in Jeopardy

    Assistance for people at risk of losing their job because of illness, injury or disability.

  • JS | Job Seeker
     
  • JSA | Job Services Australia

    An Australian Government-funded network of organisations contracted to deliver employment services to unemployed job seekers on government income support payments.

  • JSCI | Job Seeker Classification Instrument

    A system of assessment for measuring a participant’s relative disadvantage in the labour market.

  • NDIA | National Disability Insurance Agency
    The agency established to implement the first stage of Australia's National Disability Insurance Scheme.
  • NDIS | National Disability Insurance Scheme
    Made law in 2013, the NDIS will be rolled out across Australia in the coming years, and is designed to facilitate a person-centred approach to disability support. 
     
  • NDRC | National Disability Recruitment Coordinator

    A government support service that partners with large Australian employers to build disability knowledge and confidence, and to help businesses break down barriers to employment for people with disability.

  • NEIS | New Enterprise Incentive Scheme

    A scheme that helps participants become self-sufficient and independent by establishing a new small business, including training in small business management, business skills and business plan development. 

  • NFP | Not for Profit
    An organisation that does not operate for the profit, personal gain or other benefit of particular individuals such as its members, the people who run it or their friends or relatives.
  • NPA | National Panel of Assessors

    Rehab Management approved by DEEWR to provide assessment services as a member of its Disability Employment Services.

  • OGS | Ongoing Support
    Services that a DES client may receive while they are in employment, unsubsidised self-employment, an apprenticeship or a traineeship, to maintain and sustain ongoing employment independently. 
  • PPS | Post Placement Support

    A follow-on service DES organisations provide to make sure both employee and employer are happy with the way things are going.

  • PwD | Person or People with Disability
     
  • RTO | Registered Training Organisation
    Registered training organisations are those training providers registered to deliver vocational education or training services.
  • TTW | Transition to Work Program

    A two-year program that helps young people with disability gain employment after leaving school.  

  • WCS | Wage Connect Subsidy

    A government initiative to help people who are very long-term unemployed to transition to sustainable, ongoing paid employment.
